Framed art print by Johannes Vermeer

Mistress and Maid (Dutch: Dame en dienstbode) is an oil-on-canvas painting produced by Johannes Vermeer c. 1667. It portrays two women, a mistress and her maid, as they look over the mistress’ love letter.

The picture It is now in the Frick Collection in New York City.

The painting displays Vermeer’s preference for yellow and blue, female models, and domestic scenes.

Johannes Vermeer (/vərˈmɪər, vərˈmɛər/ vər-MEER, vər-MAIR, Dutch: [vərˈmeːr], October 1632 – December 1675) was a Dutch Baroque Period painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle class life.

Vermeer’s reputation and works have been featured in both literature and in films. Tracy Chevalier’s novel Girl with a Pearl Earring (1999), and the 2003 film of the same name, present a fictional account of Vermeer’s creation of the famous painting and his relationship with the equally fictional model.
